An Introduction to the Physics of Axions

This thesis will focus on the CP Problem. After a review of the Standard Model and an introduction to instantons, we will see how the QCD Theta term can have physical consequences. The Theta angle turns out to be null, so we will see possible explanations to this seemingly mysterious result, notably the QCD axion, the CP problem’s most prominent solution. We will then discuss its biggest fault: the axion quality problem. This can be solved through the introduction of a higher dimensional gauge field. This is in accordance to string-theoretical predictions. Finally, we review axionic phenomenology, ALPs, axionic dark matter and some experiments.
